As a student in the History of Art and Architecture program, youll develop a broad knowledge of the history of world art, architecture, and urbanism, and in-depth knowledge of chosen historical periods, regions, or mediums, including knowledge of style, iconography, spatial analysis, new media, and the relevant social and cultural conditions. Youll analyze an aspect of visual or spatial culture, historiography or cultural context in textual and visual form, and write papers and deliver oral presentations with clear, well-supported, and well-articulated arguments. Youll utilize interdisciplinary approaches to understand the manifold factors that contribute to the making of buildings, neighborhoods, cities, and landscapes, and their cultural and political significance. You can choose from an exciting array of classes: 14 introductory survey courses, over a hundred upper-division lecture courses on more specialized topics, and research-oriented undergraduate seminars that encourage writing and project-based learning. We also offer a challenging and rewarding Honors Program that results in a Distinction in History of Art and Architecture on the graduating transcript.
