Multicultural studies is an emerging area of study with a wide variety of career opportunities in education and beyond. Teachers with specialized skills for teaching in culturally and linguistically diverse settings make a difference in the lives of children. Your certification in English as a Second Language (ESL) from University of Houston-Clear Lake's College of Education will support your work with non- English-speakers to improve their reading, comprehension and speaking of the English language. Bilingual education teachers, who teach content in two languages, help strengthen students' native languages while building English proficiency and mastery of grade-level academic content. The Multicultural Studies focus prepares teachers to address equity and diversity issues within the classroom, school and the community while the Social Justice in Education focus offers a slightly broader focus, preparing educators and other professionals to explore, identify and advocate for human rights in a variety of environments, organizations and communities.
