Statement of Purpose. For students interested in a project- or thesis-based Masterâ€™s degree, it is highly recommended that the student contact a professor prior to application to evaluate the possibility of research collaboration. A bachelor's degree or its equivalent with a minimum 3.0 GPA or international equivalent of a 3.0 GPA. All international transcripts may be evaluated by the Center for Educational Documentation (CED) to verify the degree and calculate an American equivalent GPA if none is provided. Three (3) letters of recommendation. Graduate Record Examination scores for the General Exam. A minimum score of 300 for the computer-based examination is preferred, with minimum scores of 150 verbal and 150 quantitative. A TOEFL score or IELTS score is required for international applicants. This score may be waived for applicants from countries where English is the official language.

The UMass Lowell Department of Biological Sciences offers a general master's degree, as well as several other options within the degree. The Master of Science in Biological Sciences, and the Master of Science in Biological Sciences - Biotechnology Option provide the advanced study and training necessary to conduct independent research at a professional level and to be successful in today's competitive academic and industrial research markets. Students in the program will be encouraged to explore quantitative approaches to the solution of problems in the basic and applied biological sciences. Depending on their career goals, students may choose either research or course work options within the Department, or from the interdisciplinary Biotechnology option. All candidates for the master's degree are expected to demonstrate sufficient knowledge and skills to pursue independent and creative research activities.
