The first-year application is intended for students who have concluded their secondary education and wish to pursue a bachelor's degree as a full-time university student. Students may apply during or after their final year of secondary education, but may not apply using the first-year application if they have already matriculated to another degree-granting institution. We require the SAT or the ACT for both prospective first year and transfer students. We do not require the ACT writing section or the SAT optional essay. IELTS - 7, TOEFL ibt - 90.

The Global Studies and Languages Section offers a variety of programs. There are subject sequences in Chinese, French, German, Japanese, Korean, Portuguese, Russian, and Spanish languages and literatures taught in the original, a subject sequence on literature in English translation (SILC), studies in bilingualism, and a comprehensive program in English Language Studies. The Global Studies and Languages curriculum is arranged in three tiers. Fundamental language subjects familiarize students with the principles of the language in both its spoken and written forms, and introduce them to the culture of the country where the language is spoken. Levels III and IV language subjects provide review and refinement of grammar, study of more difficult reading matter with cultural and literary content, and include compositions and discussions in the target language. Japanese Studies at MIT has three levels (elementary, intermediate, and advance) and the curriculum of each level aims to develop four language skills (i.e., speaking, listening, reading, and writing). We specifically focus on the development of so-called ''communicative skills'' of Japanese. We have online interactive exercises that can enhance communicative skills, and we use technology proactively to help students.
