Learning languages will improve your writing and train you to look at things from many points of view.<br><br>At Hofstra, we offer majors or minors in 12 languages through two academic departments: Romance Languages and Literatures and Comparative Literature, Languages and Linguistics. All our language programs are designed to give you an education in both foreign language and culture. Cultural fluency and sensitivity are essential for virtually every industry, including banking, information technology, health care, education, law, media, marketing, and public relations.<br><br>Many students pair their language studies with another major, e.g., psychology, biology, pre-health studies, economics, and global studies. In particular, many language students complete a co-major in foreign language education to prepare for a career as a secondary school teacher. The U.S. Department of Education reported foreign language teacher shortages in 41 states.<br><br>Study abroad programs are also a big part of our language programs, and you'll be encouraged to travel internationally to immerse yourself in the country and culture of the language you're studying. In fact, many of our language students go on to pursue global teaching opportunities and prestigious international fellowships, such as Fulbright grants, a federal program that funds research, study, and teaching opportunities in more than 160 countries around the world.
