East Asian Studies is an interdisciplinary program bringing together the resources and faculty of various departments at the University of New Mexico relating to China and Japan. The program facilitates undergraduate major and minor courses of study, supports special courses and lectures with Chinese and Japanese content, and provides scholarships for students wishing to further their Chinese and Japanese language proficiency. An excellent university fosters a culturally comprehensive curriculum with a global perspective. Asia--the largest, historically oldest, and most populous segment of the world--should be prominent in the curriculum. East Asian Studies also emphasizes understanding the global village concept from the perspective of historical and everyday experiences of Chinese and Japanese countries and cultures. Minimum course grade of C or better is required to satisfy the East Asian Studies major requirements.

A program that focuses on the history, society, politics, culture, and economics of one or more of the peoples of East Asia, defined as including China, Korea, Japan, Mongolia, Taiwan, Tibet, related borderlands and island groups, and including the study of the East Asian diasporas overseas.
