UTSA's Political Science degree encompasses a broad range of subjects like American politics, international relations, political philosophy and law. You can also choose an optional concentration in Social Studies. Concentrations are declared after youve been admitted and have met with your academic advisor.<br>In this program, youll explore how individuals exercise power in group settings and the institutions, rules and processes that are put in place to promote civilian cooperation. Youll learn about democracy and other forms of government, styles of leadership, the influence of non-governmental organizations in world politics, the formation of public opinion, Constitutional law, the developing role of social media in politics, and the ideas of Plato, Machiavelli, Hobbes and Locke.<br>As part of the College of Liberal and Fine Arts Signature Experience, which seeks to offer students opportunities to apply ideas and knowledge in real-world settings, the Department encourages students to enroll in mentorship courses such as an Internship, Independent Study, Study Abroad, and Research Practicum. Majors may apply 3 or 6 semester credit hours of internship study to their baccalaureate program. Internships entail supervised workplace experience, allowing the integration of academic and practitioner learning. The internship coordinator of the Department of Political Science and Geography oversees placement. Department faculty members provide supervision and grade internship performance.
