The minimum Cumulative Grade Point Average (CGPA) is 3.0 out of a possible 4.0, or a Grade Point Average (GPA) of 3.2 out of 4.0 in the last two years of full-time studies.
Students holding a master's degree in political science may be eligible for admission to the Ph.D. program. In some instances, outstanding students with a B.A. in Political Science may be admitted directly into the Ph.D. program without having completed an M.A. degree. They will be considered Ph.D. 1.
A minimum score of 100 on the Internet-based test (iBT), with each component score not less than 20, or 600 on the paper-based test is required for admission. Please use the codes McGill 0935 – Political Science 89 when writing the TOEFL exam. The IELTS (International English Language Testing Systems) with a minimum overall band of 6.5 is also acceptable.
The university degree, described above, must have been completed with a minimum standing of 3.0/4.0 or the equivalent, according to grading scale on the transcript.

Writing Sample – Ph.D. only

The graduate option in Gender and Women's Studies is an interdisciplinary program for students who meet the degree requirements in Political Science and who wish to earn 6 credits of approved coursework focusing on gender and women's studies, and issues in feminist research and methods. A thesis for the doctoral degree must constitute original scholarship and must be a distinct contribution to knowledge. It must show familiarity with previous work in the field and must demonstrate ability to plan and carry out research, organize results, and defend the approach and conclusions in a scholarly manner. The research presented must meet current standards of the discipline, as well, the thesis must clearly demonstrate how the research advances knowledge in the field.
