Geared towards shaping students for their roles as global citizens, this specialization dives into the challenges of contemporary politics in our interconnected world. Students will examine various perspectives to explore critical themes such as democracy, human rights, North-South relations in politics, economic justice, and human security.

While citizenship is traditionally viewed through a national lens, this specialized program challenges that notion. Instead, it critically evaluates the concept of ‘global citizenship’ in the context of political challenges. These challenges include refugee movements, global climate change, corporate responsibility, ethnic conflict, humanitarian interventions, global poverty, global citizenship and its role in international relations and advancements in communication technologies.

By the program’s conclusion, students will not only comprehend these contemporary political challenges and debates but will also acquire the skills to actively engage as global citizens. This prepares them for informed participation in global affairs and for potential careers in fields such as international relations, diplomacy, humanitarian work, environmental advocacy, and corporate social responsibility.

As a part of the program requirements, students are required to either (a) take a semester or two abroad or; (b) complete POLSCI 3WP3: Working in Politics.

If students decide to complete (a) and take a semester or two abroad, they have the opportunity to complete this requirement at one of our partner schools in the United Kingdom.
