An official transcript of all collegiate work completed along with a certified translation into English.
An undergraduate grade point average of 3.000 (A = 4.000) is required by CSU regulation for admission.
Applying to our Design and Merchandising graduate program requires a number of important steps. Please note that, to apple, individuals must have earned a four-year bachelor's degree from a college or university accredited by one of the major regional accrediting agencies. Please take the time to read through the application process so you are prepared when it's time to submit your application.
Statement of Purpose
Statement of Purpose
We require a statement of purpose for three reasons:
To evaluate the fit between your professional/educational goals and the offerings of our graduate program. We want to make sure that our program can help you meet your objectives.
Provide you an opportunity to address the relevance of your academic, professional, and extracurricular experience to your goals for graduate study.
Demonstrate your communication skills. The successful completion of graduate work relies heavily on the ability to communicate your thoughts in written form.
You will submit your statement of purpose as part of your online application.
Letters of Recommendation
Letters of Recommendation
Requirement: 3 Letters of Recommendation
You will need to find a minimum of three people who are willing to write a letter of recommendation for your application.
On your application, we will need the contact information for the authors of your letters of recommendation.
This will prompt email communication to these individuals requesting the recommendation letter.
These individuals will then be responsible for submitting their letters of recommendation to us.
An Updated Resume
An Updated Resume
We require a resume to give us a better understanding of your professional background.
Submit your resume as part of your online application.
You can attach it as a PDF or Microsoft Word document.
Interior Design Applicants
We do require a portfolio of your previous work. Portfolios can include the following:
Samples of your prior coursework in interior design.
Examples of student work from courses you taught.
Professional experience in interior design.
Submit your portfolios as a PDF attachment to your online application.
Apparel and Merchandising Applicants
We don't require a portfolio for Apparel and Merchandising Specialization. Please know your application will be reviewed equally if you do not submit one.
If you do have prior experience portfolios can include the following:
Samples of prior coursework in apparel design.
Examples of your professional experience in apparel design.
Official transcripts are required from all universities attended, except from CSU.
GRE Requirements
We use the following policies for GRE scores:
< 5 years of relevant professional/industry experience AND cumulative undergraduate GPA ≥ 3.5: GRE not required
< 5 years of relevant professional/industry experience AND cumulative undergraduate GPA < 3.5: GRE required
≥ 5 years of relevant professional/industry experience: GRE not required
Minimum TOEFL score for admission without condition is 550 (paper based), or 80 (internet based).
Minimum IELTS score for admission without condition is 6.5.

The M.S. in Design and Merchandising, Apparel and Merchandising Specialization, offers the opportunity for students to critically explore how apparel products are designed and developed, distributed, and merchandised as well as the ways in which consumers interact with and use those products in various historical and cultural contexts. Emphasis is placed upon fostering cultural awareness and a commitment to social responsibility.<br> <br>Major areas of specialization for graduate study and research in Apparel and Merchandising include: Apparel Design and Production, Consumer Behavior, Historic Costume and Textiles, Merchandising, Product Development, Social-Psychological and Cultural Aspects of Dress and Appearance and Textile Science.<br>The Apparel and Merchandising specialization will offer you the opportunity to critically explore how fibers and apparel products are designed and developed, distributed, and merchandised as well as the ways in which consumers interact with and use those products in various socio-cultural and historic contexts. Emphasis is placed upon fostering cultural/global awareness and a commitment to social responsibility.
