60 general university-level credits by May 1 of the year of application, including the following:
Six credits from SOWK 110 and SOWK 210
Three credits in English composition: CMNS 125 or ENGL 105
Three credits of English literature: ENGL 108170
Three credits of human development: SOWK 225 or PSYC 250
Three credits of courses with Indigenous or First Nations content from the approved list (available on the BSW application page) or an equivalent course from another institution
30 additional General credits (see Note)
12 Discretionary elective credits (see Note)
Overall GPA of 2.67 for the 60 credits applied towards their BSW application.
A minimum of 200 hours of paid or volunteer experience in the human services field supervised by social workers or other professionals. This can include hours in practica.
Program and personal suitability as determined through a personal statement.
Two letters of reference. One letter must address the student's most recent academic experience or potential, and one must be from a supervisor in the field of social work and/or human services that demonstrates the applicant's skills and abilities.
All applicants must be aware of, willing, and able to uphold the Social Work Code of Ethics and Standards of Practice.
English Studies 12 or English First Peoples 12. Students may also present English 12, English Literature 12, English 12 First Peoples, all with a minimum C+ grade, International Baccalaureate English A (standard level or higher level), Advanced Placement English, or equivalent. TOEFL (Test of English as a Foreign Language) IBT score of 88 with no section below 20, or paper-based score of 570 with a TWE (essay) score of 4.5 or higher.
IELTS (International English Language Testing System) Academic format score of at least 6.5., with no band score less than 6.0.
MELAB (Michigan English Language Assessment Battery) score of at least 85.
CAEL (Canadian Academic English Language) score of at least 70.

UFV's Bachelor of Social Work (BSW) degree prepares you to collaborate with individuals, families, groups and communities in diverse environments and cultural settings. Upon graduation you can apply to register with the British Columbia College of Social Workers (RSW). Or, opt to pursue further studies and complete a Master of Social Work degree at UFV. You enter the BSW when you are in third year after you've completed 60 university level credits. Once admitted to the BSW program, you will complete two practicums with one of UFV's community partners.
