Three letters of reference submitted online by your recommenders. Enter the requested information about your recommenders in the online application. Each recommender will then be contacted by Penn State with instructions for uploading a letter of reference.
Official test scores:
GRE scores if you have a degree from an institution where the language of instruction is English. Request that official GRE scores be submitted to Penn State (Penn State's school code is 2660).
TOEFL scores if you do not have a degree from an institution where the language of instruction is English. Request that official TOEFL scores be submitted to Penn State (Penn State's school code is 2660).
All international applicants must take and submit scores for the TOEFL (Test of English as a Foreign Language) or the IELTS (International English Language Testing System), with the exceptions noted below. The minimum acceptable score for the TOEFL is 550 for the paper-based test, 213 for the computer-based test, or a total score of 80 with a 19 on the speaking section for the Internet-based test (iBT). Applicants with iBT speaking scores between 15 and 18 may be considered for provisional admission, with Graduate School approval, which requires an institutional test of English proficiency upon the first semester of enrollment and, if necessary, remedial course work. The minimum composite score for the IELTS is 6.5.

The Department of Germanic and Slavic Languages and Literatures and the Department of Comparative Literature offer a joint master's degree in Russian and Comparative Literature. The program enables students to concentrate in Russian literature at the graduate level while having the advantages of a comparative context. Students completing this M.A. will acquire an in-depth understanding of Russian literature and culture and will be proficient in Russian and one other foreign language. Graduates should be prepared for service with the U.S. government or an international corporation, or to continue graduate study either in Russian or comparative literature.
