English is the primary language of instruction in all Faculties except Facult Saint-Jean. All undergraduate applicants to any program or course except Facult Saint-Jean need an adequate level of English language proficiency before admission, regardless of their citizenship status or country of origin. The University of Alberta reserves the right to use discretion in determining adequate levels of language proficiency to ensure success in academic programs.
Graduation from a recognized degree program offered by an accredited university at which English is the primary language of instruction or in a country where English is the primary language.
A score of at least 90 on the TOEFL iBT (Test of English as a Foreign Language - Internet-based) with no less than 21 on each band.
A score of at least 6.5 on the IELTS Academic (International English Language Testing System) with no band less than 6.0.
A score of at least 70 on the Canadian Academic English Language assessment: CAEL (paper) or CAEL CE (computer) with no band less than 60.

East Asian Studies gives students a well-rounded, interdisciplinary introduction to all aspects of China, Korea, and Japan: their languages, histories, cultures, and societies. All of our majors become proficient in at least one Asian languagewhich students find surprisingly easy, as our Japanese, Korean, and Mandarin Chinese programs are all award-winning, taught by instructors with decades of experience making Asian languages accessible to Canadians.<br><br>On top of that, all of our majors gain cultural fluency, learning deeply about the histories, cultures, and contemporary politics and economics of Asian societies. Our professors are all experts on different aspects of Asia, so that our majors finish their degrees well-prepared to go into lucrative Asia-focused professional careers.
