We offer an optional Emphasis in Ancient History and an Emphasis in Literature & Theory. We are home to a vibrant community of PhD students with a range of academic interests, from Greek tragedy to Roman history to the modern reception of Classics. Our PhD graduates pursue successful careers in academia, higher-ed administration, K12 teaching, and more. The department welcomes applications from those who come to UCSB with either a B.A. or M.A. in Classics or related discipline. Successful applicants to the program typically show a minimum of four years training in ancient Greek and Latin, with at least three years in the stronger language.
