As a Spanish major youll develop written and spoken competence in the Spanish language, as well as a comprehensive knowledge of the literatures and cultures of Spain, Latin America, and diverse Spanish-speaking communities in the U.S. Spanish is the official or co-official language of 21 countries, and with more than 400 million speakers worldwide (projected to increase to about 530 million by 2050), it's the third most widely spoken language on the planet. According to the U.S. Census Bureau, Spanish is the most common non-English language spoken in U.S. homes. The major program in Spanish is interdisciplinary and allows you to foster your interests in different areas: language, literature, history, or social sciences. As such, our courses can complement the offerings of the Portuguese program, as well as of other departments, such as History, Black Studies, Global Studies, or Sociology. As part of your studies, youll gain expertise in differentiating between informal and formal registers of written and spoken Spanish, as well as in cultural nuances that make up the rich tapestry of national and ethno-racial identities of the Spanish-speaking world. Youll build knowledge and skills applicable to careers in the legal profession, education, the foreign service, social services, and health professions.
