The department requires a bachelor's degree in Portuguese or its equivalent. Candidates who are deficient in preparation will be required to take the necessary undergraduate courses to make up for deficiencies before beginning work in the M.A. program. Statement of Purpose (in English)

Two writing samples, in Spanish or Portuguese: Normally these are academic papers, between 10-30 pages long, ideally drawing from primary and secondary sources. Submit samples that best show your analytical and critical skills, and your potential as a scholar and researcher.
Copy of official transcripts from all post-secondary institutions uploaded in the online application
Three (3) letters of recommendation. These letters are submitted online directly by your recommenders (not by you). The online application provides instructions on how to submit the letters of recommendation. If your first language is not English: TOEFL scores (minimum: 550 Paper-Based Test [PBT], 80 Internet-Based Test [IBT]) or IELTS scores (Overall Band Score must be 7 or higher). To be considered for admission to UCSB, applicants must have received a bachelor's degree or its equivalent (with a cumulative grade point average of 3.0 or better) from an accredited university prior to the quarter for which admission is sought.

The Department of Spanish and Portuguese awards the degree of PhD with specializations in Spanish and Latin American (Hispanic) Literatures, Portuguese and Brazilian Literatures, and Iberian Linguistics, plus optional emphases on Translation Studies, Feminist Studies, Medieval Studies and Applied Linguistics. These programs are supported by an outstanding and internationally recognized faculty representing the following areas of teaching and research: Peninsular and Latin American culture and literature, Portuguese and Brazilian Studies, US Latino studies, translation studies, drama, critical theory, new media studies, popular culture, applied linguistics, and language pedagogy.
