Russia's world-renowned art, literature, film, and music can help you understand this vast and diverse country beyond the headlines. As a student in the program, youll take courses covering different aspects of Russian and East European culture taught by dedicated and expert faculty who will give you all the personal attention you need to succeed. Of course, the best way to understand another culture is through its language We offer world-class instruction in the Russian language at all levels of proficiency. Career options for majors and minors include business, government, law, medicine, travel, education, and translation.<br><br>The Department of Germanic and Slavic Studies offers programs of study leading to the B.A. in German language and literatures and the B.A. in Russian and East European Studies. Please see the Comparative Literature Program for M.A. and Ph.D. degree emphasis in German language and literature. Students in each program acquire an appropriate linguistic background in lower-division courses, and are exposed to the modern language in most upper-division classes. The curriculum for each program is designed to provide a wide range of courses on literatures, arts and cultures in a global context. Qualified students majoring in German may spend a year at one of the three partner universities of UC's Education Abroad in Berlin. These universities also offer a one-semester course of study.
