The Linguistics major focuses on the how and why of all languages. It does not focus on a single language. The major is a scientific study of the origins of words, the spreading of languages and the human capacity for language. Available courses include:<br>Phonetics and Phonology<br>First Language Acquisition<br>American English Dialects<br>Language in Society<br>Cross-Cultural Linguistics<br>Students majoring in Linguistics often use their degrees in teaching, publishing, software development, translation or cross-cultural environments while others pursue graduate studies in a variety of fields. Students may also pursue a linguistics minor, which requires students to complete 18 hours of upper-level courses in the English department. Students can major in English or Professional Writing and pursue this minor. However, they may not major in Linguistics with a minor in Linguistics. Baylor also offers several Living-Learning Centers, which are housing opportunities designed to place students of common interests together. Baylor offers a Baylor and Beyond Living-Learning Center that is available for all majors and classifications, but it is ideal for students interested in language, culture and engaging the world around them.
