As a small department, we offer the MA degree through a fully-funded program carefully designed to fill a special niche in philosophy graduate education. Our course-based, two-year program is geared towards students who have decided to pursue a PhD in philosophy, yet currently lack the background or academic record required for entry into the world's best philosophy departments. The department is particularly strong in Ethics, Philosophy of Mind, Philosophy of Science, and we have expertise in areas of Epistemology and Metaphysics, as well as in History of Early Modern, Analytic Philosophy and Logic. Several faculty members have strong interests in empirical research in Psychology, Neuroscience, and Cognitive Science. Completion of 11 philosophy courses: one must be the Pro-seminar, PHIL 880, completed in the first graduate year, two courses may be a 300 or 400 level undergraduate course with graduate studies committee permission, completed with a grade of A- or higher. The remainder must be graduate courses. demonstrated competence in such foreign languages as the departmental graduate committee requires for the proposed research. demonstrated competence in formal logic up to standard metatheory for first order logic, or higher when relevant to the proposed research.
