Academic transcript. Unofficial transcript uploaded to the online application. If you are admitted, an official, degree-bearing transcript must be mailed to the University. Applicants must complete a U.S. bachelor's degree (or its equivalent in another country) before starting a graduate program.
Personal statement/essay. Describe in approximately 500 words your main academic interests, why you wish to study for the degree you have chosen, why you wish to study at Syracuse University, how you expect to finance your studies, and your plans for the future after you receive your degree. Upload directly to the online application.
Additional writing sample. Include a sample of strong academic writing (no more than 10 pages), which should be uploaded directly to the online application.
Resume. Upload directly to the online application.
Due to COVID-19, GRE test scores will be waived for the fall 2022 admissions cycle. If you have taken the GRE, you are still encouraged to submit your scores. Please submit official scores through ETS.
The recommended minimum TOEFL score required on the internet-based (iBT) test is 90
The minimum IELTS score is 6.5

The master of arts (M.A.) in communication and rhetorical studies provides a vibrant and dynamic environment for students hoping to pursue further study in communication studies. Our program has a strong academic research focus and is ideal if you plan to go on to pursue doctoral-level education.<br>Our M.A. degree program features nationally and internationally prominent, award-winning faculty who balance deep roots in the discipline with interdisciplinary innovations. Its curriculum stresses theoretical and methodological diversity, close guidance and advising by faculty instructors, and high academic standards. We specialize in training M.A. candidates to thrive as teachers and scholars and to succeed at the most renowned doctoral programs in the country.<br><br>The M.A. in Communication and Rhetorical Studies requires 33 credits beyond the B.S. or B.A. degree. Twenty-four credits must be taken in the Department of Communication and Rhetorical Studies, and up to 9 may be taken in areas outside the department. No more than 6 credits may be earned in independent study courses. Candidates may choose to write a thesis for 6 credits, or earn the entire 33 credits in coursework and take a culminating comprehensive examination.
