An International Baccalaureate grade of 4 or higher in English A1 or A2 at the Higher Level or Standard Level or English B at the Higher Level is required for regular admission (predicted or actual). Students whose native language is something other than English must present proof of English proficiency. Texas State accepts the following measures of English proficiency for regular admission: Test of English as a Foreign Language (TOEFL) minimum score of 550 (paper-based test) or 213 (computer-based test), or 78 total score (internet-based test) with the following 3 out of 4 minimum section scores: 19 in Reading, 19 in Listening, 19 in Speaking and 18 in Writing, or International English Language Testing System (IELTS) minimum score of 6.5 with a 6.0 in each section. Applicants must submit original academic records (or copies which have been certified by an appropriate school official) of all secondary and post-secondary course work, examination results, SAT or ACT test scores (directly from the testing center), certificates awarded, and/or diplomas. A certified English translation must accompany the original academic records if the originals are not in English, Freshman applicants who are, or will be, graduates of foreign secondary schools must demonstrate above average academic achievement. Above average academic achievement is demonstrated by means of class rank (i.e. being ranked by your school in the top half of the class) or have a grade point average (GPA) of at least 3.0. Applications must also have an education equivalent to that of a U.S. high school graduate. Freshmen who are, or will be, graduates of a U.S. high school and who have completed at least two years in a U.S. high school must meet the freshman admission requirements established for U.S. citizens.

The School of Journalism and Mass Communication is accredited by the Accrediting Council on Education in Journalism and Mass Communication (ACEJMC). Our program offers a curriculum that introduces students to the broad framework of mass communication, emphasizing what is common and fundamental to advertising, digital media, electronic media, journalism and public relations.The mission of the School of Journalism and Mass Communication is to pursue excellence. Our programs strive to cultivate strong professional, research, theoretical, critical and ethical skills in a diverse and engaging environment that prepares students to be socially responsible media professionals, scholars and citizens. Students may earn a Bachelor of Arts in Mass Communication or a Bachelor of Science degree with a major in Advertising and Mass Communication, Digital Media Innovation and Mass Communication, Electronic Media and Mass Communication, Journalism and Mass Communication, or Public Relations and Mass Communication.<br><br>Working in electronic media is a hands-on experience. Often it's live. It's now. Students put into practice what they learn, and they instantly see the results of their efforts. KTSW-FM 89.9 gives students an opportunity to be on-air hosts and to serve in management positions. Bobcat Update – created under deadline -- is a television news program requiring writing, videography and editing skills. All students in the Electronic Media Sequence assemble a portfolio that consists of solid writing as well as audio and video samples. Graduates can enter the work world as reporters, producers and behind-the-scenes decision makers, just to name a few of the many options available.
