The Master of Arts degree in Communication Studies is intended to provide a broad spectrum of knowledge about human communication in various social contexts, and the ways in which information is produced and processed. Curriculum focus is on the social and behavioral study of communication theory and research. The program prepares individuals to pursue a doctorate degree, as well as for non-academic careers in which a broad understanding of communication theory and research is desirable.<br>Program Learning Outcomes<br><br>Graduates of the program will be able to:<br><br> Read, critique and engage in theory-based research involving a broad spectrum of topics in human communication.<br> Understand and master appropriate methodological skills for the study of human communication and apply them to relevant and shifting real-world contexts that often include newer communication technologies.<br> Utilize theory-based and state-of-the-art knowledge to stimulate and improve communication processes in educational, business and nonprofit environments.<br><br>The study of mediated and mass communication examines a wide range of media uses and effects, including the use of media for mass, interpersonal, organizational and group communication. This emphasis addresses various communication tactics used by individuals, organizations and government to reach and influence the public. A focus in this emphasis introduces students to theory and practice related to persuasive communication and the analysis of media processes, uses and effects.<br><br>Graduates of this program will have the abilities to work in communication and information-related fields, including: media promotions, public relations, political campaigns or lobbying, social media management, advertising, community outreach, media campaign development, media consulting, motivational speaking, market and audience research, public affairs, strategic message design, corporate communication, etc. With a firm understanding of theory and practice, graduates of this concentration may also pursue higher education in prestigious Ph.D. programs.
