Communication is the study of basic human social processes: the creation and dissemination of meaning and information. The major prepares students for graduate study or professional positions in such fields as interpersonal and organizational communication, journalism, media production and criticism, political communication, and public relations. Students develop skills and knowledge that put them at the edge of a rapidly changing communication industry. Majors learn to construct and evaluate messages across platforms?web, print, audio and visual.The communication degree at Mason combines a rich study of how humans understand one another and work together, while providing immediately translatable skills and knowledge valued across industries. You will learn to create and manage public and media relations plans, craft social media campaigns, produce videos, write for news and entertainment media, produce television and radio programs, and more.Criticism courses offer students the opportunity to learn to think purposefully and critically about media and examine media roles from many perspectives. Through four required courses within the concentration, individuals may engage in different comparative and ideological frameworks, thereby providing a theoretical grounding in the study of media content, processes, and effects.Production courses offer participants foundational knowledge applicable to a wide range of current media-related professions. Through four required courses within the concentration, individuals will have the opportunity to develop hands-on production skills, achieve technical proficiency, and make sophisticated choices in working with new technologies and emerging platforms, such as broadcast TV, mobile apps, streaming media, corporate communications, and social media.
