Applicants to the PhD in Public and Urban Policy must hold a master's degree from an accredited U.S. college or university or the equivalent degree from a foreign college or university, in addition to a bachelor's degree or its equivalent. Applicants in the process of completing their master's degree may apply for admission.
The doctoral program in Public and Urban Policy seeks applicants with academic and/or professional qualifications that prepare them for advanced research and practice in public policy analysis with an urban orientation. GRE and GMAT test scores are not required.
Complete a Statement of Purpose
Your statement of goals and purpose (1,500 words maximum) should describe your academic and professional interests and goals, explain why you want to pursue a doctorate, and tell us why our PhD in Public and Urban Policy is a good fit for you. This statement should discuss the kind of research you intend to pursue as a student and explain why this work is important for what you expect to accomplish after completing the degree. Please include a frank self-assessment of your work as a scholar. You are encouraged to discuss the importance of your work experience for your academic and career plans, especially if you have been out of school for an extended time.
Submit Your R'sum or CV
Submit a one to two-page r'sum/curriculum vitae summarizing your academic qualifications, relevant work experience, published writing, volunteer/community work, professional networking, public speaking, and/or any other relevant experiences that may relate to your field of study, including dates and positions held. Please also note any special language or computer skills that you have.
Submit Two Letters of Recommendation
Two letters of recommendation from professional and/or academic references are required. Recommendations must be submitted by recommenders directly via the online application portal. Instructions are included in the online application.
Submit College Transcripts
Applicants must upload an unofficial transcript, mark sheet, or academic record for each institution (even if you didnt receive a degree) in the Academic History section of the online application.

The doctoral degree program in Public and Urban Policy is rooted in The New School's tradition of progressive scholarship in the social sciences. Scholarly research and thinking are brought to bear on pressing issues of policy, design, and local and global development. You are encouraged to explore a range of theoretical perspectives, methodologies, and critical research approaches as you expand and refine your focal area of study to meet ongoing and emerging policy challenges. The Public and Urban Policy PhD program prepares students for careers in the academy and professional practice. Our graduates pursue academic careers in teaching and research, as well as research and senior-level roles in think tanks, government, and nonprofit and nongovernmental organizations.<br><br>Graduates hold academic positions at the University of Illinois at Chicago, Brooklyn College, University at Buffalo, Ohio State University, Queens College, University of California, Davis, City University of New York, Loughborough University, and The New School. They serve as researchers and executives at major organizations such as the Center for Data Insights at MRDC, Planned Parenthood Federation of America, Human Rights Watch, the Center for Women's Policy, and the Center for American Progress.
