Applicants must have a cumulative grade point average of at least 3.0 (on a 4.0 scale) and satisfactory scores on the aptitude parts (verbal and quantitative) of the Graduate Record Examination. (To be considered for financial aid in our Ph.D. program, the GRE scores must total at least 310 (on the new scale) on the verbal and quantitative parts combined.). While helpful, a Bachelor's degree in economics is not required --the program is open to students from other fields such as mathematics, statistics, and engineering. However, all applicants must have taken at least 12 hours of economics, including two intermediate theory courses, one in price theory, and one in macro-economics.
Applicants also must have a working knowledge of calculus (equivalent to one semester for the MA program and three semesters for the Ph.D. program) and of basic statistics. Additionally, some background in linear algebra and real analysis is also helpful. Foreign students must submit scores of the Test of English as a Foreign Language (TOEFL}, the minimum required score is 90.

Southern Methodist University offers several options for students interested in pursuing graduate work in economics. The Department of Economics offers a Ph.D. in Economics, as well as several Master's degrees in Economics including an M.A. in Law and Economics, an M.A. in Applied Economics, and an M.S. in Applied Economics and Predictive Analytics. The graduate program trains professional economists for varied careers in college and university teaching, in government service, in business and nonprofit organizations, in research institutions, and in consulting firms. It blends economic theory and policy with quantitative and statistical techniques to equip students with a sound understanding of economic analysis. In addition to taking formal courses, students are involved in activities designed to develop their research skills. As a result of such efforts, some of our recent graduates have had an article or two published before completing their degree work.
