A strong academic background that demonstrates the capability to successfully undertake graduate studies. Duke University requires the completion of a four-year undergraduate degree to be eligible to apply.
A professional background of at least five years which shows an increase in responsibilities over time. Development-related experience is preferred.
Essays which demonstrate a commitment to working in development and a deep awareness of development issues.
Strong letters of recommendation from professional and/or academic references, which speak in detail about the applicant's potential and skills.
For all applicants, strong written and oral English skills are absolutely essential to succeed in the MIDP program.
The Graduate School admits applicants who have one of the following minimum scores (some departments may require a higher score):
• 577 for paper-based TOEFL
• 90 for an Internet-based TOEFL
• 7.0 for the IELTS

Three letters of recommendation are required in support of your application.
Discuss a particular policy problem or challenge you have encountered in your work or that your country has faced.
Applicants are not required to submit GRE scores.
In your personal statement, please describe why you are interested in this program, how you expect the program to benefit you and your home country or region, how aspects of your professional, academic, and personal experiences have shaped you, and your professional goals upon graduation. Please limit the statement to one page.
Prior to submitting your application, you are required to upload one copy of your scanned unofficial transcript from each institution you have attended. To be eligible for the one-year degree, applicants must have completed at least one year of graduate-level coursework in a relevant field, and must also have an academic background in market-based economics with high grades/marks. You are required to provide an undergraduate grade point average (UGPA) in the Education section of your application. The undergraduate grade point average is usually well above a B (3.0 GPA).

The Master of International Development Policy (MIDP) is a unique, flexible interdisciplinary degree program that trains mid-career professionals who plan to dedicate their careers to policy-making and public service in developing countries. The Master of International Development Policy program at Duke is the most flexible program of its kind. The graduate degree is tailored to mid-career professionals who have worked in development-related sectors and know what kind of impact they want to have in the world. An MIDP degree from Duke equips changemakers with the policy tools necessary to shape social, political and economic development efforts worldwide. As a fellow in the program, you co-design your own unique course of study, guided by your passions and career interests. In addition to the MIDP core curriculum, fellows choose elective courses from MIDP and departments across Duke, and even courses at other nearby universities. The program offers both one-year and two-year degree options.
