Three letters of recommendation: These must be submitted online. An automatic e-mail will be generated and sent to your recommenders within 24 hours of your application submission. The e-mail will contain instructions and a secure link to their letter of recommendation online.
Statement of Purpose: The statement of purpose should be submitted as a single document that addresses the following:
Areas of interest: Discuss your academic and professional interests and goals. Describe the research areas and problems that you hope to focus on in your graduate work. Identify at least two UT-Austin Department of Anthropology faculty members whose work might contribute to your own research goals and discuss how and why. (No more than 1000 words)
Background and motivation: Describe your reasons for pursuing graduate study. Discuss how and why you came to be interested in the research areas you describe in the first part of this statement, as well as any information that you believe your application would be incomplete without and that sheds more light on your unique potential to succeed in the Anthropology program and contribute to the University community and the field or profession. (No more than 500 words)
Transcripts: Upload an official trancript from every senior college you have attended. Transcripts are not required from junior colleges and community colleges. Do not mail transcripts.
A writing sample. For students who have attained an MA, a copy of the MA thesis or report if available is requested. For students who are unable to provide a copy of their thesis, a writing sample related to proposed area of study is required.
A grade-point average (GPA) of at least 3.0 (on a 4.0 scale) or a comparable GPA in upper-division workjunior- and senior-level coursesand in any graduate work already completed is also required.
TOEFL: 79 on the Internet-based test (iBT)
IELTS: An overall band of 6.5 on the Academic Examination

Students who completed their M.A. degree in the department and wish to pursue a Ph.D. should apply for entry to the Ph.D. program in the semester following their receipt of the M.A. (Students who take a leave of absence after the M.A. should apply for entry to the Ph.D. program immediately upon returning to the University.) The student will submit a Request for Ph.D. Program Admission form to the Graduate Studies Steering Committee (GSSC) for approval. Students admitted into the department after receiving a master's degree elsewhere should clarify their status in the program with the Graduate Advisor as soon as they arrive on campus. Students who have been admitted directly into the Ph.D. program should form an examination committee during their first year of study. Such students should follow the procedure outlined above for master's students applying for admission to the Ph.D. program. Students are required to complete 18-hours of coursework for the Ph.D., including at least 9-hours of Anthropology core courses. Courses completed in the Anthropology M.A. program at UT will count toward the doctoral program of work.<br>The Department of Anthropology of the University of Texas at Austin offers a broad program of research, teaching and community engagement that builds upon the historical strengths of archaeology, linguistic anthropology, biological anthropology and sociocultural anthropology in order to understand and address the challenges of a culturally diverse, increasingly globalized and rapidly-changing world.<br>The sociocultural program offers the opportunity for the pursuit of a diverse array of theoretical, methodological, and topical approaches, with faculty engaged in groundbreaking and timely research and teaching in subjects ranging from the politics of performance to state formation, multispecies investigations to the U.S-Mexico borderland, affect studies to feminist anthropology.
