North's Mathematics program is the largest and most comprehensive community college math transfer program in the Puget Sound area, with a high student completion rate and a strong history of successful transfers to the UW, University of Illinois, NYU, UCLA and other 4-year institutions. The project used the results of quarterly assessments in pre-college level math courses to guide professional development and instructional training. Most math faculty and faculty in several related disciplines (such as biology, economics and psychology) were involved in the project. Faculty collaboratively designed contextualized assignments using real-world examples and inquiry-based problem-solving methods to reinforce the most commonly troublesome content areas at each level of developmental math.
