The Department of Mathematical Sciences offers programs of study leading to the degrees of master of science and doctor of philosophy in applied mathematics or mathematics. The department also offers a 4plus1 B.S./M.S. program that allows students to complete both the bachelor of science degree in any undergraduate major administered by the department and the M.S. degree in a total of five years of full-time study.<br><br>Many of the major areas of mathematics are included among the research interests of the faculty of the department. There are numerous active seminars on these and other mathematical topics, as well as a steady stream of visiting scientists from all over the world. Mathematics is both a science and a tool for many other disciplines, including the physical and life sciences, engineering, economics and sociology. The M.S. degree provides advanced mathematical training at a level beyond a Bachelor's degree. Mathematicians use mathematical models, algorithms, graphs, networks, and other mathematical structures to solve problems in a broad range of fields. Thesis and non-thesis options are available.<br><br>The M.S. degree in Mathematics or Applied Mathematics can be earned through one of two options: 30 credits of graduate level coursework, or 24 credits of graduate level coursework and 6 credits for research and thesis in the final semester. The Master's thesis must be successfully completed and defended.
