The Mathematical Economics with the Actuarial Science Concentration seeks to prepare students for careers as actuaries. Actuaries use a combination of strong analytical skills, business knowledge, and an understanding of human behavior to manage risk.To become an actuary, you must pass a series of exams to earn actuarial designation by either the Casualty Actuarial Society (CAS) or the Society of Actuaries (SOA). It can take many years to pass all of the exams. In this major, you will take courses that provide you the best chance of success on the first two actuarial exams. In addition, you can apply to receive Validation by Educational Experience (VEE) credit from either the CAS or SOA in the areas of Applied Statistics, Economics, and Corporate Finance, obtained through approved course sequences. B.S. in Mathematical Economics qualifies for STEM OPT extension. The major requires a minimum of 61 hours in mathematics, economics, and finance courses and leads to a Bachelor of Science degree. The major of study does not require completion of a second major or a minor.
