Applicants to the MPhil or PhD typically will have an undergraduate degree in Economics (upper second class or above. Applicants to PhD will also typically have an MSc in Economics. Applications must include a detailed research proposal and two academic references from the applicants? most recent academic institution. The quality of the proposal is very important for the final outcome. Importantly, admission to the PhD programme may be through entry in our MRes programme with the possibility of upgrading to a PhD. Progression to the second year of the PhD would be based on a satisfactory performance on the courses of economics and econometrics plus some evaluation of perhaps a survey chapter for the dissertation.

You can study MPhil, PhD in the Centre for European Labour Market Research. Research in the Centre generally falls in one of four primary themes, Education, Skills and Labour Mobility, Inequality in the Labour Market, Health and Work, The Public Sector and Wage Determination, though researchers also investigate many other areas of labour market research. The Centre for European Labour Market Research (CELMR) became an official Research Centre in January 2000, and was formally launched in November 2000 with Professor Theodossiou appointed as the Centre's Director. With a membership of 17 out of the School's 55 full-time staff, CELMR has emerged as one of the strong disciplinary research groups in the School, it also has strong links with the Medical School through collaboration with the Health Economics Research Unit (HERU). The Centre's activities include seminar series and the publication of its own discussion paper series. It also supports graduate student research and sponsors visiting scholars. To provide a focus for the identification and implementation of high quality research projects in labour market economics To make a substantive contribution both to academic understanding and to policy debate on labour market issues within the UK and the European Union To develop and evolve a coherent research agenda and create a framework for the acquisition of funding to undertake and expand the research agenda To provide a structure within which interested individuals and groups can provide mutual support in advancing their research and create a structure within which young researchers can obtain help and advice To create a structure conducive to postgraduate study To provide a link with other scholars, commercial interests and governments in both the UK and European Union To develop European and international links of the highest possible quality with a view to collaborative research and the exchange of personnel in order to establish a major focus of activity on a European scale
