Music educators train the musicians of tomorrow. Our professionally recognised music education degree will immerse you in the world of performance, composition and teaching. Our music education program will prepare you for a career as a music teacher in both the primary and secondary school environments. You will develop teaching skills through studies in education, music education, choral and instrumental pedagogy and music technology.

The Historical Performance principal study is available in the Bachelor of Music (Performance), Bachelor of Music (Music Education) and Diploma of Music in the following areas: baroque flute, lute, organ, recorder, viola da gamba or harpsichord, and involves instrumental lessons, performance workshops and masterclasses. Sydney Conservatorium of Music is arguably the most most vibrant centre for the study of historical performance in Australia. Our Historical Performance staff include musicians who perform regularly with leading national and international ensembles which foster historically informed performance (HIP) such as the Ironwood, Australian Chamber Orchestra, Australian Brandenburg Orchestra, Orchestra of the Antipodes, Pinchgut Opera, Salut Baroque, Orchestra of the Age of Enlightenment and English Baroque Soloists. Our Historical Performance program currently offers tuition in a wide range of historical instruments including clavichord, harpsichord, fortepiano (including 18th and 19th centuries), lute and guitar, viola da gamba, trumpet, cornetto, sackbut, historical violin, viola, cello and bass (17th to the 19th centuries), recorder, baroque and classical flutes, oboes and bassoons. We also offer training in historical voice. These instruments can be taken as a principal study for an undergraduate or postgraduate degree. Chamber music and orchestral studies programs complement academic studies in historical performance. Students gain experience in the Early Music Ensemble (the Sydney Conservatorium's period instrument orchestra), meeting twice weekly and performing four or more varied concert programs each year. Masterclasses and lecture/demonstrations from local and international artists supplement the student's experience, and the Historical Performance Workshop provides hands-on feedback from tutors and peers.

Historical Performance students will develop as professional musicians who will reach the levels of excellence demanded by the music profession. Graduates are prepared for a diverse range of career opportunities, including careers as performing soloists, chamber musicians and orchestral/ensemble players, as well as music educators, creators, researchers and writers.
