Candidates for the Degree must have
- qualified for the award of the degree of Bachelor of Media and Creative Technologies of the University of Waikato with at least a B grade average across the 300 level papers, or for a qualification considered by the Academic Board to be equivalent, and
- satisfied the prerequisites for graduate study in the subject(s) being presented for the Degree, including through submission of a portfolio of previous work, at levels considered appropriate by the Academic Board.
In exceptional circumstances, based on academic merit and relevant experience, candidates who do not meet the requirements of these regulations may be considered for admission subject to the completion of any qualifying papers the Academic Board may prescribe which must be completed either prior to or concurrently.
English Language Requirements
- an Academic IELTS Overall score of at least 6.5 (with no less than 6.0 in any band), or
- a TOEFL iBT (Internet Based TOEFL) score of 90 with a Writing score of 21, or
- a TOEFL iBT Home Edition overall score of 90 with a Writing score of 21, or
- a PTE Academic overall score of 56 with no band less than 46, or
- a B2 First (formally known as Cambridge English: First (FCE)) with an overall score of 176 and no bands below 169, or
- a C2 Proficiency (formally known as Cambridge English: Proficiency (CPE)) with an overall score of 176 and no bands below 169, or
- a Michigan English Test (formally known as Michigan English Language Assessment Battery (MELAB)) minimum score of 59.

Screen and Media Studies’ Master of Media and Creative Technologies will enhance the knowledge, skills and technical scope of media creators, designers, and producers to excel above the rest in the creative industries.<br>The Master of Media and Creative Technologies (MMCT) allows you to further your knowledge and skills in Screen and Media Studies, offered under the Te Kura ToiSchool of Arts, School of Social Sciences, School of Design, and Waikato Management School. The reason this qualification is popular both nationally and globally is that it not only provides students with a distinct edge in increasingly competitive media fields but provides the opportunity for you to become a leading practitioner and thinker ready for the challenges of the creative industries.<br>Alongside taught papers, you will work with our internationally-renowned media academic staff where, under their supervision, you will develop a portfolio of audio-visual projects. Areas you can explore include are, but not limited to: short film, documentary, animation, photography, AI, VR, scriptwriting, online content, podcasts, multimedia installations. Effectively, students take a lead in their learning, developing and producing creative works that showcase their distinctive voice ready for public exhibition and employment in numerous media-related fields.<br>Study under the MMCT will give you extensive collaborative project experience which is supported by technical expertise and advanced creative skills. You will also benefit from substantial grounding in postgraduate academic practice and the deployment of critical and methodological skills in original research.
