Combining the study of philosophy with history enables you to study major philosophers from ancient Greece to the present day alongside questions about the nature of the past and interpretations of it.Within the study of philosophy, you do not so much learn about philosophy, as learn to do it yourself. This includes not only studying major philosophies and philosophers, but also contributing your own ideas to an ongoing dialogue. You develop the ability to connect the most abstract ideas to the most concrete things in our experience.

You learn about major philosophers from ancient Greece to the present day, wrestling with logic, metaphysics, epistemology and topics such as existence, truth certainty, meaning and freewill. The history component of the programme raises its own questions, about the nature of the past and our interpretations of it, understanding how human actions, cultures and contexts have defined the past and indeed, the present day. Both subjects follow a modular structure allowing students to tailor their studies to their own interests.

On this programme, you develop excellent skills of analysis, frequently assessing multiple and often conflicting sources before condensing opinions into concise, well-structured prose. Graduates are able to demonstrate self-motivation and the ability to work independently, demonstrating to potential employers that they respond positively to various challenges and that they can work to tight schedules and manage heavy workloads. Many graduates find employment in fields such as journalism and the media, management and administration, local and national civil services, the museums and heritage sector, commerce and banking, teaching and research, and the law.
