The medieval and early modern period saw seismic changes in European society, many of which have shaped our modern world. With this degree programme, youll explore and analyse those changes covering a wide range of history's most violent events and sweeping changes. The development of religious terrorism and the evolution of Islamic-Christian relations in the crusades. The colonisation of the Americas and the Protestant Reformation. And the revolutions in Britain, France and America that paved the way for the modern democracies. Youll study it all, and more. However, it was a period marked by more than struggle: this was also a period of major artistic and intellectual development. So, youll also have the chance to study great writers from the medieval and early modern period, from Augustine to Descartes, to see how their ideas translate today. With a wide range of units on offer, you can explore this fascinating period in terms of broad themes and movements, or you can choose more in-depth units, where you read primary sources medieval and early modern Europe. All history students, whichever degree route you have chosen, can spend their second year on an exchange abroad. You will spend the full academic year at your chosen institution and there are a wide-range of universities to choose from in Australia and the United States.
