It doesnt take today's political drama to make America's story fascinating or powerful. With this degree, you can explore the events and forces behind the United States rise from humble beginnings to becoming the single most dominant country in the world with unmatched economic, political and cultural influence. Youll explore some themes which are central to modern thinking including democracy, immigration, race and imperialism. Youll learn what drove those early settlers across the Atlantic and consider what made them different from the people they left behind in Europe. And youll uncover the dark side of the American past, from the treatment of Native Americans, to slavery and the Civil War waged to end it. By developing an in-depth understanding of American History, you wont simply discover the story of how it grew in stature and influence. Youll also gain a perspective into its character and its psyche uncovering what the American way really means. Graduates may be employed in a wide range of industries including: museums, galleries, heritage sites/historic houses, heritage organisations and charities, record offices, archives, building conservation, horticulture and nature conservation, national and local government, libraries and universities. Some graduates may also be interested in teaching after studying history at degree level, and go on to study for a PGCE (Postgraduate Certificate in Education).
