Explore the theoretical understanding and practical application of education, combined with the core concepts of sociology, enabling you to develop your skills in conducting social research. You will study a range of important social issues and contemporary challenges as well as how professionals operate in the education sector, from policy making to teaching. Education and Sociology will help to equip you with valuable skills in communication and problem-solving, preparing you for a career in teaching or related fields.Education and Sociology at Keele explores the nature of learning including the core elements such as policy, teaching and practice, whilst providing insight into various aspects of the social world and how these areas influence the social challenges faced by individuals.On this combined honours programme, you will actively engage with discussions around various topics such as psychological, sociological and cultural influences in education, and consider how these may evolve in the future. You will explore key issues and challenges associated with teaching and learning at different levels, such as primary and secondary.You will be encouraged to critically evaluate what education means to individuals and to consider important scenarios around the roles and responsibilities of teachers. You will explore how children learn and analyse contemporary assessment methods, considering key factors such as age, the support a student may receive in a range of educational settings, as well as the influence of technology that plays a crucial role in their learning. With this knowledge you will become familiar with how the education sector operates and the ways in which teaching is delivered, with consideration of classroom behaviour amongst students.Sociology focuses on the study of cultures, communities and identities and explores how our everyday lives intersect with contemporary digital environments. You will engage with the topical issues facing us today as a result of technological evolution, from changes to work life balance, to migration and the social challenges posed by an increasingly unstable climate.As you cultivate an increased awareness of social inequalities, you will grapple with a range of significant sociological issues such as class, gender, migration, family, belief, and belonging. You are encouraged to adopt an analytical approach, evaluate theories and explanations, and construct fair arguments grounded in both data and your own critical thinking. You will be able to demonstrate your abilities and creative thinking, working with fellow professionals as well as independently.You will be supported by staff in your preparation to apply for a work placement that suits your interests and career prospects. This opportunity will allow you to develop both personally and professionally during your studies which will assist you in your employment after university.
