Applicants should demonstrate the following:
A track record of high academic achievement, demonstrated by a good undergraduate degree with at least a second class (upper division) pass or equivalent.
Good research methodological skills as demonstrated through relevant research experience and/or a good Masters level degree with at least a pass with merit (or equivalent).
Excellent communication skills, both written and oral (see also the section on English language Requirements).
Excellent planning and time-management skills.
For students whose first language is not English, the following qualifications will meet the English language requirement for entry to a postgraduate course of study:
A first degree from a UK university or from the CNAA
A first degree from an overseas institution recognised by City as providing adequate evidence of proficiency in the English language, for example, from institutions in Australia, Canada or the USA
GCE O-level/GCSE English language or English literature, grade C minimum
An overall score of 7 in the English Language Testing System (IELTS) with a minimum of 7.0 in writing
Satisfactory standard in the verbal section of the Princeton Test (GMAT)

This multi-site PhD provides the opportunity to deepen your expertise in psychology, whilst exploring the emerging field of social neuroscience.You’ll investigate a range of topics in cognitive, social and affective neuroscience. You will be working alongside leading researchers from City, University London and Sapienza Universita di Roma.You’ll benefit from access to research expertise and facilities in both institutions, which have been paired due to the complementary nature of their resources.Working with healthy subjects - and subclinical, clinical and neuropsychological patients - you’ll study topics such as: embodied cognition and the neural correlates of cognitive, social and affective functions like empathy, intention, action and emotion understanding.On completing the PhD, you will receive a degree from both, laying the foundation for a collaborative international academic career.Show lessabout OverviewStructure:<br>The Joint PhD in programme in Psychology and Social Neuroscience is designed to develop your skills as an independent scholar. The PhD programme is structured as follows:Year 1<br>In year one students are assigned a tutor, who will supervise their work, supporting the student’s growth throughout. A research topic will be chosen in accordance with the training program.Research topic and technique are chosen by considering student's interests, resources and lab's priorities at City and Sapienza.Year 2<br>In year two students will finalise their literature review, develop an outline of the overall shape of their thesis and carry out the bulk of their empirical and analytic work.Year 3<br>In year three students will conclude their empirical work and focus on writing up their thesis. They will also seek to disseminate their work in the form of peer-reviewed publications andor conference presentations and identify opportunities for the next stage of their career.MPhil award:<br>All students on graduate research programmes are initially registered for an MPhil award.Promotion to registration to PhD is not automatic, but contingent on the satisfactory outcome of a review process.Progress in subsequent years will continue to be monitored through the annual review process. Any failures to meet expected milestones may lead to the withdrawal of candidates.Duration:<br>Full-time: 1 – 3 years<br>Part-time: 4 years<br>PhD by prior publication: 1 year
