How do we become who we are Is emotion as strong a driver as reason What explains our stranger compulsions and desires Does all behaviour have meaning - even when it appears to be irrationalPsychoanalysis is an interdisciplinary field of studies and clinical practices, gathering over 100 years of theorization and clinical experience in framing its ideas and concepts about the mind, emotions, social relations, motivation, psychopathology and psychotherapy.Understanding human experience means looking not only at how we act and relate, but crucially also requires looking inside at what is going on below the surface. In this course you look at the psychological factors that influence our emotions, behaviours and relationships and shape our everyday lives. To understand these factors you will learn psychodynamic concepts, applying them to individuals, relationships and organisations and of course, you will study the pioneering works of Freud, Jung and Lacan. Here are some of the questions we might cover. Why do we fall in love with certain kinds of people but struggle to relate to others Why do we get stuck, or lose direction in life What explains our stranger compulsions and desires Why are some people prone to psychological illness while others seem to thrive in adversityTopics include:Psychoanalytic and psychosocial approachesChild, adolescent and adult developmentTrauma and recovery: A psychodynamic approachUnderstanding individuals, groups and organisationsPopular Film, Literature and Television: A Psychoanalytic Approach (Freud and Jung)Freud: Mind, Culture and SocietyWhere the Wild Things Are: Literature, Childhood, PsychoanalysisCurrent debates in depth psychologyPsychoanalysis and the childOur Department of Psychosocial and Psychoanalytic Studies is internationally recognised as one of the leading departments for work on the role of the unconscious mind in mental health, as well as in culture and society more generally.Study abroadYour education extends beyond the university campus. We support you in expanding your education through offering the opportunity to spend a year or a term studying abroad at one of our partner universities. The four-year version of our degree allows you to spend the third year abroad or employed on a placement abroad, while otherwise remaining identical to the three-year course.Studying abroad allows you to experience other cultures and languages, to broaden your degree socially and academically, and to demonstrate to employers that you are mature, adaptable, and organised. If you spend a full year abroad you'll only pay 15% of your usual tuition fee to Essex for that year. You won't pay any tuition fees to your host universityPlacement yearThis course allows you to spend your third year on a placement year with an external organisation, where you learn about a particular sector, company or job role, apply your academic knowledge in a practical working environment, and receive inspiration for future career pathways. You will be responsible for finding your placement, but with support and guidance provided by both your department and our Employability and Careers Centre. If you complete a placement year you'll only pay 20% of your usual tuition fee to Essex for that year.
