课程简介
This English Language for Speech and Language Therapy degree has been developed specifically for those aiming for a future career in Speech and Language Therapy (SLT). While this degree does not lead to SLT certification upon graduation, the aim and goals of this undergraduate course is to help build a strong foundation for further postgraduate study and subsequent certification as a speech language therapist. You will become proficient in understanding how English works, why and how it is used, and where it has come from. You will also develop extensive knowledge of English linguistics and the areas of general linguistic theory that underpin study in this field.
In studying English Language for Speech and Language Therapy, you will explore how English works, and also you will learn about relevant aspects of linguistics such as: the grammatical structure (e.g., word order, sounds, meaning), the history of English, dialects and social variation, social, educational and cultural aspects, global English, and more. You will look at the way English has changed over the centuries, considering what will become of it in the future, comparing English use in different parts of the globe, and considering important practical aspects of English such as the hundreds of millions of people worldwide learning English as an additional or foreign language.
Additionally, you will study subjects which will provide a foundation that is suitable if you want to pursue a career in speech therapy after you graduate, including comprehensive training in phonetics and speech sciences, aspects of cognitive and developmental psychology and considerations of the methods, approaches, techniques and issues relevant to speech and language therapy.
Placement Year and International Experience Year Available

Careers
A graduate of this English Language for Speech and Language Therapy degree is likely to want to pursue a career as a speech and language therapist, and this course provides an excellent foundation for that path. However, most walks of life benefit from having language and/or literature experts on their team, and if you graduate from this course you will have the knowledge and skills needed to go into fields like the media, translation, interpreting, publishing, teaching, civil service, community work (e.g. related to language policy and engagement), librarianship, etc. In some cases you will need further training and qualifications beyond what this course provides, and if you wish to pursue a career in speech and language therapy (SLT) then a Masters qualification in SLT is a logical next step. A career in language research is also an option, as is postgraduate study in this or related areas.
