A Doctor of Philosophy (PhD) degree involves original and sustained research, mentored by an academic supervisor. It’s an opportunity to make new discoveries, address some of the big issues of our time, challenge yourself, and develop a mix of transferable and specialised skills. Develop your expertise in Māori culture and language and refine the research skills you need to better understand the past, present and future of Māori. You’ll work with Te Kawa a Māui—School of Māori Studies staff who are active researchers. Coming from a range of specialist backgrounds, they give you access to broad and varied expertise. Study issues in Māori society, investigate the range of research methodologies available and build a deeper understanding of te reo through the study of classical waiata, whakataukī and karakia and contemporary compositions. Your lecturers will teach using a variety of methods designed to cater for different learning styles. Most courses involve lectures and tutorials based on campus during the day. Experienced staff will supervise you on research projects of your own choosing.
