Education and English Literature explores a diverse range of literary works from different cultures and historical periods while also showing how professionals operate in the education sector, from policy making to teaching. You will investigate the historical evolution and contemporary challenges of education, and explore the relationship between literature and society, looking at issues such as decolonisation, the environment, and gender and sexuality. This programme aims to equip you with the ability to critically analyse and communicate effectively, building valuable skills for a career in education, teaching or related fields.Education and English Literature at Keele explores the nature of learning and its key elements including policy, teaching and practice, whilst investigating literature from Shakespeare to contemporary times.On this combined honours course, you will actively engage in discussions around various topics such as psychological, sociological and cultural influences in education, and consider how these may evolve in the future. You will explore key issues and challenges associated with teaching and learning at different levels, such as primary and secondary.You will learn to critically evaluate what education means to individuals and to consider important scenarios around the roles and responsibilities of teachers. You will explore how children learn and analyse contemporary assessment methods. With this, you'll consider key factors such as age, the support a student may receive in a range of educational settings, as well as the influence of technology that plays a crucial role in their learning.This programme will help to build your awareness of how the education sector operates and your familiarisation with the communication between students and teachers, as well as the collaboration between professionals in the workplace. You will explore the ways in which teaching is delivered and consider classroom behaviour amongst students and how they learn.In English Literature, you will be taught by expert lecturers in the School of Humanities. You will explore and interpret literary texts that will challenge your views, advance your tastes, prompt your creativity, and give you the opportunity to become a versatile graduate. Through a range of activities and assessments, our diverse course will equip you with a vast array of attributes that employers are looking for, including problem solving, creativity, emotional intelligence, and digital literacy.You will examine literature in English from across the world, including Britain, North America and Africa, taking a truly global perspective. This experience will help you to pursue your passions, grow in confidence, and gain a unique set of transferable skills that will be invaluable for your future career in a variety of sectors.Work PlacementsIn the School of Social Sciences, you may have the opportunity to apply for a placement module to develop your knowledge and skills in professional environments. This may include opportunities to experience teaching and learning in Primary, Secondary and Special Educational Needs (SEN) schools.During this experience, you would observe and assist with classroom activities and develop your practical and professional skills in the company of professionals and learners in different age and development stages. We have a wide range of contacts with local schools in the area where you can gain this valuable hands-on experience in the education sector.Our foundation year provides an excellent alternative route to Keele, providing a unique opportunity to better prepare for your chosen degree, and with guaranteed entry onto your undergraduate course once you successfully complete your Foundation Year.
