Foundation Entry degree courses are designed for students who have the ability to study for a degree, but don't have the necessary formal qualifications to enter directly onto their chosen Honours degree programme. In the Foundation Year of the Politics, Philosophy and Society BA, you will be able to choose options in any of the three main areas covered by the programme. You could learn to think philosophically by considering pressing ethical questions such as whether we ought to allow human cloning. You could choose to deepen your understanding of the aims and methods of sociology. Or you could embark on the academic study of Politics. Whichever options you choose, our supportive staff will supply you with the ideal preparation for Years 1 to 4 of this incredibly diverse and wide-ranging course. Studying Philosophy in combination with Politics will enable you to bring a distinctively philosophical perspective to bear on your understanding of political issues. It will provide you with an in-depth understanding of a range of highly influential moral and political theories that have been held to underpin competing conceptions of social justice and just institutions. It will also give you insight into the fundamental debates about the nature of humanity, the self, knowledge and reality that frequently underlie disagreements about the proper form and goals of social and political institutions.Students take 18 modules, at the rate of 6 per year. Optional modules may be taken alongside an 'elective' module, to make up the yearly quota of 6. Elective modules offer a choice from a wide range of modules offered across the university, and may for example include a language module, a work placement, or a careers or employability module. The range of modules on offer will vary slightly from year to year. The selection below is correct for the upcoming academic year, but should be regarded as indicative only for future years. You will be able to gain practical work experience in relevant settings, allowing you to practise the transferable skills you've gained in the workplace. Employability and career development is fully supported throughout the programme and opportunities exist to learn a language and travel abroad through the Worldwise Learning Centre. Opportunities also exist for national and international work placement through our award-winning Centre for Volunteering and Community Leadership and international exchange opportunities with universities in Europe and North America are a feature of the programme. Previous graduates have gone on to careers in teaching and research, journalism, public relations, central and local government, the European Union, charities and NGOs. Recent students work in public and private sector organisations, both nationally and internationally.
