Our degree enables you to explore issues like globalisation, human rights, migration, shifting geopolitical power and the socio-political effects of global climate change. Processes of globalisation increasingly shape societies all across the world as they influence local labour markets, patterns of consumption, cultural practices and social values, but also domestic and local politics. On this course, you'll study fundamental subjects in sociology, from social modernisation, communities and the changing role of social identities such as gender, race and class, alongside key political issues like the changing role of the state and growing power of international organisations. In Year 1, you will be introduced to foundational concepts in the study of international relations and significant issues in contemporary international politics through which these concepts can be understood and interpreted. You look at some of sociology's key thinkers whilst tracking the historical development of sociological theory from ‘classical' to 'contemporary'. And you will begin to develop your research abilities and will gain hands-on experience of research skills. In Year 2, you'll explore a range of classic and contemporary thinkers to address the double role that sociology has inherited from its origins. And you will be able to tailor your studies to you own areas of interest with a choice of 3 modules from a range of options. In your Final year, you will explore the social intersections between gender, race and class. You will undertake an advanced research project on a topic of interest. You'll also choose 2 options from a wide range of specialist modules, and can also opt to undertake a placement in a work environment, which will give you valuable work experience and look good on your CV.
