Bachelor of Fine Arts, Bachelor of Arts, or equivalent degree from an accredited college or university or, for international students, an institution recognized in its own country as preparing students for further study at the graduate level. Degrees in graphic design or visual communication design are preferred. Candidates from other curricula will be considered based on abilities demonstrated in portfolio, statement of intent, and space available. Two years’ experience in the graphic design practice is preferred.

Resume (1-3 pages)
Statement of intent. An essay describing their background, creative aims and reasons for pursuing an MFA at FAU (500 - 750 words)
Portfolio: 15 to 20 examples of design work with project descriptions. A selection of the applicant's most significant projects including self-initiated projects. See guidelines.
Copy of official transcripts.
Three letters of recommendation
Transcripts: Submit official transcripts in sealed envelopes from all schools attended.
Non-native speakers of English must provide evidence of proficiency in English from: Test of English as a Foreign Language (TOEFL) or International English Language Testing System (IELTS). The minimum university requirement for TOEFL is 500 (Paper-Based Test) and 61 (Internet Based Test). The minimum university requirement for IELTS is a band score of 6.0.

The MFA program in Graphic Design engages each student in an individual pursuit to expand his or her knowledge of visual communication design systems. The aim is to further development towards a career in design education and/or professional practice. Students and faculty from diverse cultural, educational and professional experiences engage in critical discourse that challenges and strengthens each student's understanding of communication theory, research methodology, and approaches to solving design problems. Encouraged to identify and expand their own voices as designers, students take a combination of graduate design studios, seminars, art history courses, and directed independent study projects, culminating in a graduate thesis project, exhibition and document. Graduate students are expected to take a leadership role in the department and in their interactions with undergraduate students.
