Test Scores (International Students Only)
-A TOEFL (Test of English as a Foreign Language) or IELTS (International English Language Testing System) test score is required if your undergraduate education was completed in a non-English speaking country. Even if you hold a master's-level degree from a U.S. or other English-speaking country you must still take the TOEFL or IELTS test.
-Scores must be current within 2 years of the semester to which students are applying.
-TOEFL Internet (iBT)* preferred: 83 with a minimum of 22 on the writing, 23 on the speaking, 21 on the reading, and 17 on the listening portions of the TOEFL iBT exam.
-TOEFL (PBT) 575 with a minimum of 5 on the TWE and/or 61 on the written expression section of the TOEFL PBT exam.
-IELTS: 7.0 with aminimum of 6.5 on the writing portion of the IELTS exam.
NOTE: You must complete the Rutgers Graduate Application before submitting your Design Application and Portfolio. You will be sent a link to the Art & Design SlideRoom application within 2 business days of submission of your Graduate Admission Application. The portfolio should show your experience skills and interests as a form-giver. You may include works created under academic guidance, by commission or through self-driven research. Please provide examples of the full range of your recent practice, whether focused or diverse.

The Rutgers MFA in Design is a two-year, full-time course of study that combines creative work and critical inquiry. This program focuses on the innovative use of technology and interdisciplinary research in the creation of publications, experiences, exhibitions, information, interfaces and more - preparing designers for a contemporary design studio practice that contributes to the future of arts, science, humanities and technology. The Rutgers MFA in Design values experimentation and criticality. It combines studio work and the study of historical, theoretical, and cultural contexts with opportunities for collaboration with experts in the wide range of fields at Rutgers University. The program emphasizes research-driven work, empowering designers to identify, question, and synthesize quantitative and qualitative data and material from primary sources, to underpin their creative projects. Design becomes a tool for inquiry and investigation alongside communication and expression.
