During your four years as a dance major, you'll be introduced to new ways of thinking about yourself as an artist, and about dance and movement.Mason's program focuses on modern dance and ballet. However, you can also participate in a global experience class every semester. Recent offerings include African, Afro-Caribbean, Spanish, Asian, Butoh, Uzbekistan, Indian and Hawaiian. Courses are also offered in jazz and tap. In addition, you'll have master classes from artists performing at the Center for the Arts and visiting Guest Artists.Modern dance and ballet are at the heart of our technique program, and you can take a modern and a ballet technique class each day throughout your four years of study. Each semester, you will explore a new approach to thinking about modern dance. However, every approach has in common its intent to develop your skills as a dancer and has at its core an understanding of the anatomical principles that underlie movement.The BFA in Dance is a performance-oriented contemporary dance program designed to prepare students professionally as performers, choreographers, educators, and active leaders of the dance community. Students in this program demonstrate technical mastery and devote their college study to an intensive and comprehensive dance curriculum.Daily technical training in modern dance and ballet, and numerous performance opportunities develops a versatile dancer. Student progress in the BFA program is assessed consistently. Because of the professional nature of the BFA degree, the program requires completion of 126 credits of coursework.
