2.7 (on a grading scale with 4.0=A, approximately a B- average) on the last two years of Bachelor's coursework, 3.0 on all previous graduate work (approximately a B average). An applicant was awarded a Master's degree at an accredited college/university in the United States and has been in residence in the United States continuously prior to application to SIU (not out of the country for more than one calendar year). You have a minimum of 60 graded (A, B, C) hours of recent coursework completed at an accredited college / university in the United States with continuous residence in the United States prior to application at SIU. Pass / Fail, Satisfactory / Unsatisfactory, or Proficiency credit is not acceptable. The English language requirement may be met by submitting: 550 on the paper-based TOEFL, 80 on the internet-based TOEFL, 6.5 on the IELTS
To apply, students must fill out the online application for Admission to Graduate Study in Theater. Applicants for graduate studies in theater must satisfy the minimum requirements of the Graduate School before being admitted to the school. The application includes a statement of purpose, transcripts from all undergraduate and graduate coursework together with three (3) letters of recommendation from former teachers or supervisors.
There are additional requirements established by each of the areas of study in the M.F.A. in Theater Program. Applicants in the directing area are required to submit materials that are representative of their previous theater work and/or indicate an aptitude for stage direction (including promptbooks, programs, reviews, photos, video tapes or casebooks from previous directing efforts). At this time, each applicant will work with actors on a directing scene to demonstrate their ability to analyze the scene and work with actors. Applicants in the costume, lighting, scene design and technical direction areas are required to submit portfolio samples of their work. Applicants in the playwriting area must submit approximately two to two-and-a-half hours of written material consisting of one full-length play and/or several significant short pieces.

Throughout the course of study for MFA students focusing on playwriting, courses focus on performance theory, dramatic literature, script analysis and theater history. Five major areas are covered during the three-year program which include:<br><br>Short plays written weekly in collaboration with colleagues that result in three to five minutes script-in-hand productions.<br>The first year seminar focuses on the structure and theories of playwriting in a two-part course that results in a full-length play at the end of the first year of instruction.<br>First year workshops that include readings of full-length plays in the spring and second and third year workshops that focus on the completion of full-length written plays over the course of the academic year.<br>Professional development meetings each week with the head of the program to focus on playwright development and the business of playwriting itself.<br>The New Plays Festival which has different roles for first, second and third year graduate students. In years one and two, MFA students collaborate with actors and directors to produce a public staged reading of thesis plays while third year students create a full production of their completed scripts.<br>Earning a graduate degree in the Theater program at SIU offers extremely specialized, advanced training in one of six areas of study. Our graduates receive hands-on, practical knowledge within their chosen field and become experts in their career paths throughout the three-year course.<br><br>Faculty members are well experienced and are active in the theater community both locally and nationally to provide insight and instruction regarding the many facets of theater, production and performance. Fostering creativity and scholarly advancement, the MFA theater program is dedicated to ensuring excellence in education, creative contributions to the field of theater and cultural service to both SIU and the theater community as a whole.
