The arts engage, inspire and entertain us. They open our eyes to different points of view and are an important component of any well-rounded education. The College of Visual and Performing Arts offers degrees in art, dance, film and video studies, music, theater, arts management, art education, and computer game design. Students have the opportunity to study alongside internationally renowned visiting artists, showcase their work in public exhibits, and perform onstage at one of our many campus venues, including the Center for the Arts. In addition, you can find plenty of artistic inspiration in nearby Washington, D.C.The Bachelor of Arts in Art and Visual Technology (AVT) is a liberal arts program that emphasizes breadth of experience in the context of a liberal arts education rather than professional specialization. In addition to completing the university-wide general education requirements, electives, and either a foreign language through the intermediate level or a minor, AVT majors must complete our core foundations experience, breadth and experience, art history and critical theory requirement, and required concentration courses. Students choose from one these concentrations: Drawing, Graphic Design, New Media, Painting, Photography, Printmaking, and Sculpture. A list of approved concentration courses is available from the department.Students with a concentration in drawing undergo a four-semester sequence, which trains them not only in the materials and techniques of observational drawing, but also to see drawing as the most immediate form of visual thinking. Students are encouraged to explore drawing as a vital language and investigate a variety of media, forms, and traditions, including contemporary drawing theories and practices.
