The arts engage, inspire and entertain us. They open our eyes to different points of view and are an important component of any well-rounded education. The College of Visual and Performing Arts offers degrees in art, dance, film and video studies, music, theater, arts management, art education, and computer game design. Students have the opportunity to study alongside internationally renowned visiting artists, showcase their work in public exhibits, and perform onstage at one of our many campus venues, including the Center for the Arts. In addition, you can find plenty of artistic inspiration in nearby Washington, D.C.This intensive 120-credit studio production program emphasizes analytical, creative, and experiential aspects of studio and new media art. It is designed to prepare students professionally as visual artists or for graduate study in the fine arts. Students devote a significant portion of their college careers to an in-depth study in their concentration. Students are admitted into the BFA by portfolio review only. In addition to completing the university-wide general education requirements and electives, majors must complete our core foundations experience, breadth and experience, art history and critical theory requirement, and required concentration courses. Students choose from one of these concentrations: Drawing, Graphic Design, New Media Art, Painting, Photography, Printmaking, and Sculpture. A list of approved concentration courses is available from the department.Students with a concentration in drawing undergo a four-semester sequence, which trains them not only in the materials and techniques of observational drawing, but also to see drawing as the most immediate form of visual thinking. Students are encouraged to explore drawing as a vital language and investigate a variety of media, forms, and traditions, including contemporary drawing theories and practices.
